Meta?

Leaving #Twitter for #Bluesky is like leaving prison and committing a felony right away. After finally realising the opportunity of being free, why would you do everything to end up being a prisoner of a centralised platform run by another billionaire?

I read an article in Rolling Stones magazine (@RollingStone) from 2017 about Elon Musk, "The Architect of Tomorrow." It's very funny to read this today. It reminded me of an argument I had a few years ago with a software developer I respected, because he argued that the guy was a genius and I said he was just a crook. Until recently, in the developer bubble, many people I knew said that the guy buying Twitter would be fantastic for the platform because it would increase freedom of expression. I even saw people I used to work with sharing some of this nonsense.

Isn't it amazing how easily people are manipulated into believing fantasies that help create a myth? And there was a lot of help from the media in all of this. This is the richest man in the world, who some believed wanted to solve humanity's problems, but is helping to destroy US democracy and interfering in that of other countries to go the same way.

I think the same problem with representation among #Wikipedia entries is pervasive among #FOSS projects as well - including the #Fediverse :

Contributions are done by those who have sufficient free time to work on such projects, which usually means having a stable, comfortable existence. Thus, the majority of contrirbutors tend to be white men - and they bring their own biases with them.

This is a problem - while the concept of the Fediverse is great, our user base is not very diverse. #Twitter in the old days blew the Fediverse out if the water, in this regard at least.

We need to include a lot more different people for the development of the Fediverse, from all over the world, instread of the crowd if largely white Europeans and North Americans we have now. Yet how can we include them, if the expectation is that the contributors should work for free - something much harder to do if you _don't_ have a stable source of income and a job that gives you sufficient free time?

Sauropods.winmyrmepropagandist (@futurebird@sauropods.win)Everything wrong with the Wikipedia is something that is just generally wrong with working with humans. My experience with the Wikipedia included being harassed white nationalists because I edited their creepy "Race and IQ" article. A very ugly experience. I did not feel supported or protected by "the wikipedia community" -- Despite this, I STILL think it's one of the best resources on the internet. That Mr. Musk wants to destroy it only makes me more confident this is correct.
